Kettlebells, like dumbbells and barbells are ‘free weights’. All 3 are far superior to machines. All 3 can be used to work all your major muscle groups. It is the design that makes the kettlebell different. When you hold a kettlebell, the weight is displaced differently. With Dumbbells the weight is centered on your hand with Kettlebells... it isn’t. This means that there is a constant pulling on you due to the centre of mass being different which forces you to counter balance working your hard to reach stabiliser muscles as well as the big prime movers. This makes for a body truly ready for lifes little knocks and those heavy boxes.
Every exercise you can do with a set of dumbbells, you can do with Kettlebells, and where Kettlebells really come into their own is with the ballistic movements. Much easier to do with Kettlebells than Dumbbells. It is the ballistic moves that really work the body and get the heart pumping raising fitness levels sky high and burning fat like a furnace.
The handle on the kettlebell makes the weight easier to hold for the
ballistic drills and also adds a pulling, during these drills, due to momentum and gravity, that you have to actively counter with tension in the muscles of your body. This makes the drill
harder, more effective, and more taxing on the muscles of your body, creating a very efficient and effective workout.
Have no doubt. Kettlebells give a total body workout in much less time than other forms of training. Kettlebells, unlike dumbbells and machines, allow for more range of motion during the lifts to
improve flexibility. The exercises are compound movements. They mimic everyday motion, treating your body as a whole, not a group of parts like the isolation exercises commonly used in bodybuilding
style training.
Kettlebell training IS weight training. But don't let this put you off. Kettlebell training will produce an athletic, classic physique with a strong strong core and a strong, healthy heart. It will not produce a body that is inflexible, that can't move properly and is muscle bound.
